We are very pleased to announce this year’s SWG Christmas Party is a fancy one, taking place at Halifax Hall (near Ecclesall road) on Saturday 7th December, starting at 7.00pm.
Hathersedge Stanedge Circular
Winter is coming… but we keep walking! David will lead a 6-mile moderate walk from Hathersage up to Stanage Edge and back. And of course there’s the option of cooling down (or warming up?) in a pub at the end.

Weekend Away: Sheen Bunkhouse (Staffordshire Peak)
Our first weekend away of 2025 is a local one, to the far reaches of the Peak District. Famous for attractions such as Dove Dale, Chrome Hill (“The Dragon’s Back”) and The Roaches, it’s nice to explore those local places we rarely visit for day trips.

Monsal Trail Circular Walk
On this walk, Mollie will take us to part of the Monsal Trail and through the Monsal Dale woodland without too much ascent.
Walking on Ice! (Ice Skating)

As we head into the winter it’s time to ditch those walking boots for a pair of ice skates! This is a great opportunity to improve your coordination and balance while having lots of fun!
Booking on is fairly simple - we plan to do the Wednesday 13/11/2024 Simply Skate Slot at 19:40 here: https://www.sheffieldcitytrust.org/bookings/ice - please book on yourselves. Tickets are £9.95 (I will ring later this week to confirm if this includes skate hire but I assume it would). The slot is for 1 hour and 20 minutes. These don't look like they fill up often so if you are uncertain about attending you will probably still be able to book on the day or just turn up. Please wear warm clothing, ice rinks tend to be cold!
The site is outside the city centre in the direction of Meadowhall but there is free on-site parking. Alternatively you can get the yellow tram or 207 bus. There are food/drink facilities on site.

Ready for a walk around Derwent Edge with our experienced leader Alex. The route is not entirely clear yet, but we will end up at the pub!

Hop on the train to Grindleford for this 10-mile walk led by Jono. With some decent ascents, this is bound to be a good walk!

Autumn Drawing Walk
The autumn edition of Miranda’s drawing walk, this time with a more architectural theme as we make our way round the Chatsworth Estate and enjoy the buildings and views.
Chatsworth Fireworks
Putting it simply. Starting at the car park we take a short walk to an advantage point overlooking Chatsworth House to stand/sit and watch a firework display. Feel free to bring snacks!
Note: Chatsworth tend to call off the display if it's adverse weather, you will be notified if this happens.

Want to help solve one of the great philosophical question once and for all? A walk from Fox House with a twist. For the first 10ish path junction we will have a vote on which way to go and see where we end up!

Book 7 - The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson
Our main goals of this book club are to read more and to read things we may not have otherwise read. Members suggest books which we then vote on. The book that gets the most votes is the book we all read. Once you have read the book, there is an optional meet up where we have a casual chat about the book.

Like games? Then you’ll love Squid Games. Don’t worry, no one dies if you lose. We have booked Hathersage Cricket Pitch for ourselves and the plan is to have 4 teams competing against each other in various games.

A 6 mile wander down from Fox House to Hathersage in time for our afternoon social at Hathersage Cricket ground - Squid Games!
Sheffield 20s and 30s Walking Group Annual General Meeting 2024
All SWG members (those with active ramblers membership) are invited to the Sheffield 20s & 30s Walking Group Annual General 2024. Meeting that this year will be held at the upstairs function room of The University Arms. 19:00 to 21:00 but then a chance to stay around for a drink afterwards.

A quick visit to the Emperor (lake)
A walk through Chatsworth Park up to the Hunting Tower taking in views back to the house.
Near or Far, High and Bleaklow
A venture out from Woodhead pass up near or far black clough to Bleaklow with possible water falls and planes along the way. We will start form the western end of the Woodhead tunnel before turning south to look for the route to middle black clough waterfall. Depending on the conditions of the water crossing we will either take a short scramble to this waterfall or keep out boots dry and save it to the end

Weekend Away: Rhyd Ddu (Snowdonia)
Our late summer weekend away is to Rhyd Ddu (“rid thee”) in the heart of Snowdonia, sitting right behind Snowdon, 80 metres from the start of the Rhyd Ddu path.
