Full description: 

This 10 mile circular walk covers an area of countryside to the west of Barnsley, taking in the villages of Silkstone and Cawthorne as well as an extended lunch stop at Canon Hall country park and farm.

Starting from Silkstone Common, we are quickly in the countryside and will walk downhill and past Blacker Dam. After walking through Silkstone village we pick up a number of country paths, mostly across farmland. We will reach Canon Hall country park by lunchtime where we will have an extended lunch stop to explore further.

As we start our return journey, we cross the country park and walk by the river, skirting around the village of Cawthorne. We eventually pick up the Silkstone Waggon Way for a couple of miles. After taking a more direct route back down to Silkstone Common we arrive back at our starting point.

Public transport or car sharing options: 

Suggested public transport: 09:35 from Sheffield (Huddersfield stopping service) calls at various stops on the way, arriving Silkstone Common at 10:12. After alighting from the train, follow the steps down from the platform which bring you out by the meeting point. Return journeys are hourly.

Car parking: on street in Silkstone Common. Please check for any restrictions and leave plenty of time to park to ensure a prompt departure.
