Wyming Brook is a beautiful stream on the edge of Sheffield, and in the autumn the colours of the larch trees (the only deciduous conifer) make it even more beautiful. But this year may be our last chance to see this display, as the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum (literally "Plant destroyer") has been identified on site and across Sheffield. As the disease is usually fatal, has no cure, and spreads rapidly, Sheffield Wildlife Trust is planning to remove large numbers of trees to slow the spread. But it's not all bad news, as in the long run native trees (larch is not native) are expected to recolonise the valley.
From the (ivy) heart of Crosspool it's just a few minutes walk to the edge of the city where we walk down the side of the Rivelin valley for a short break at the Apple Shack (bring cash for cakes and drinks). Then we visit the top end of the Rivelin Valley Trail, take a short walk along the main road before taking a small path tucked behind the waterworks to enter the woodland. We'll visit Wyming Brook itself, Fox Hagg, various viewpoints and the Head Stone before finally returning to the top of the valley to enjoy a drink at the Three Merry Lands (or the Sportsman) before catching the bus home.
Public transport or car sharing options: Number 51 bus leaves Arundel Gate at 09:40, bus stop is directly opposite the start. A day ticket may be cheaper than two singles.
If driving you can park near Coldwell Lane and walk/ride the bus from the end, or park in Lodge Moor and make your own way to The Apple Shack.
