A classic, taking in all the best bits the Peak District can offer from lapping reservoir waters, pine plantations, open moorland, good views and cool rock formations!
Meeting at the Fairholmes bus stop (near the Upper Derwent Visitor Centre), we will initially head south through the trees along the bank of the mighty Ladybower reservoir. We will then head up through Hagg Side Pine Plantation, which should offer some green and piney goodness in the midst of winter. From here we will head out onto the moor towards Alport Castles, said to be Britain’s largest ever landslip. Once there, those who wish to can scramble to the summit can do so. The rest of us can watch and enjoy the stunning views of the Alport Valley.
Our meandering route will then head back east, down to the safety of the pine trees and Derwent Reservoir where we will follow the private road back to the café for a well-earned brew.
Moderate – 10 miles – 500m of ascent (similar to 1.5 trips up Win Hill but not all at once). Approximately 5 hours. Mostly well-worn footpaths that could be muddy in places, the last section is on a private country road.
