11-mile circular route. Starting from the train station, we will head towards the River Derwent to pick up and head along the Derwent Valley Heritage way, south through Grindleford, below the escarpment of Froggatt Edge and towards Froggatt Bridge cross over and head up hill West, crossing the road with an view of both Froggatt and Baslow Edge behind us, towards Riley Wood. Before entering the wood we will have a chance to view Riley Grave, the site of the Hancock family (Elizabeth, her husband & six children) who died in the plague 1666. From the site of the graves, we will continue West into Eyam (dependent on the weather, time of day and number of people) where refreshments are available. Once past the church, we will then head North, uphill and past Ladywash Mine towards Sir William Hill. From this point we will head downhill, across Eyam Moor, then back towards Hathersage.
Please bring winter-appropriate clothing and footwear as it’s likely to be cold, wet and muddy on this hike. This walk is likely to take around 5-6 hours so please bring enough food and water for this duration. There are some good options in Hathersage for a brew or a bite after the walk.
