Walk Leader: Phil Derych (07923953338)
Difficulty: Moderate
Start time: 09:40am (finish est. 2:45pm)
Start/End point: Langsett (Langsett Barn Car Park)
Distance (in miles): 13 miles
A Langsett loop! Exploring some of the Peak District’s northern assets – Langsett Reservoir, Thurlstone Moors, Winscar Reservoir, Snailsden Edge and yet another good country pub, to name a few. It’s not as intense as the Edale walk a few weeks back (famous last words). Honest!
Kicking off with the calming of Langsett Reservoir, through woodland we’ll then (safely) cross the A628. Ignoring the temptation to sneak into the Dog & Partridge, we’ll hit the Barnsley Boundary Walk, edging west onto Thurlstone Moors. We’ll pass the Windleden Reservoirs, briefly treading on the Trans Pennine Trail before crossing the dam of Winscar Reservoir. Here we can cut over the bridge of Harden Reservoir, onto Snailsden Edge – above Holmfirth, a town nestled at the northern tip of the Peak District.
From Snailsden Pike End, we’ll drop past Snailsden Reservoir and reconnect with the Barnsley Boundary Walk, into the Dunford area, returning eastward on track/road.
There is an opportunity for a toilet stop (and cheeky part-way pint) at a pub, namesake of a popular watering hole near the Longshaw Estate in Sheffield, before heading back towards Langsett.
Naturally, the walk ends at a pub (the Waggon & Horses), just down the road from the car park, for hearty refreshments. There is also the option of the Bank View Cafe, opposite – which I hear is very hard to miss....
Looking forward to good company in rediscovering an area I’ve not explored since childhood!
ELEVATION: a steady 200 metres, spread across the entire route
TERRAIN: a mix of path, track and road (no *planned* off-path walking this time....). I am renowned for muddy footpaths (as the title suggests) – you’ve been warned!
TRIG POINTS (for those ticking them off) - two: South Nab near the A628 (461m) and Snailsden Edge (475m)
RESERVOIRS: Langsett, Upper Windleden, Lower Windleden, Winscar, Harden, Snailsden.
DOGS: more than welcome!!
REFRESHMENTS: bring food/water, but there should be at least one opportunity for a part-way pint/toilet stop.
GEAR: as always, please come prepared for our varying northern weather (waterproofs, sensible footwear etc, whatever you are comfortable in).
