Walk title: Conisbrough and the River Don

Proposed date: Saturday 9th March 2024

Difficulty: Medium

Start time: 1040

Start point: Conisbrough Railway Station

End point (if not circular): Conisbrough Railway Station

Distance (in miles): 11

Full description: This walk takes us to an area not frequently visited by SWG. Beginning at Conisbrough Railway Station the walk starts by following the Transpennine Trail a short distance as far as Denaby Ings Nature Reserve. The route then sees us head north through High Melton and Melton Wood Country Park to the small village of Marr, before turning south and heading to the riverside village of Sprotborough.

If the weather is decent there'll be an opportunity for a quick refreshment stop in Sprotborough before resuming the walk and following the River Don all the way back to the start point at Conisbrough Railway Station. This final section of the route takes us alongside the stunning 21 arch Conisbrough Viaduct and there'll be a chance to take in the views from the top.

The walk is 11 miles long but is mostly flat and easy terrain. The paths are mostly decent but there are a couple of fields on the route that could be muddy.

Please remember to bring a packed lunch and plenty of water, and dress appropriately for the time of year. Don’t forget your waterproof!

Public transport or car sharing options: 10:05 Northern train from Sheffield to Adwick arrives at Conisbrough in time for the walk start.
The X78 bus also runs between Sheffield and Conisbrough but takes longer.
Car parking is available close to the station.
