Name: Phil D (07923953338)
Difficulty: Moderate (5-6 miles)
Start/End point: Earl Sterndale (bench on village green)
Following a perky ridgeline of limestone pinnacles, said to resemble the spine of a sleeping stegosaurus dinosaur, this route combines history, quirky geology and peacefulness. Also fun under foot, it makes for a cracking day out in the White Peak, particularly in Autumn, well worth the drive.
Starting in the village of Earl Sterndale, we'll take the path behind the notorious Quiet Woman pub, through fields presenting our opening view of the ridgeline. We'll ascend the reef knolls of Parkhouse Hill (360m) and Chrome Hill (425m, enjoying views of the parallel Hollins Hill) before hopping across a bobbling flurry of limestone studs to visit a former RAF bunker upon High Edge (try to fit inside it if you dare!).
There are options for the return route to complete the circular, but each provide enjoyment of a different viewing angle back towards the hills we have just traversed.
Throughout the journey, take time to appreciate and admire the rich geological history of this area - a keen eye can pick out a fossil or two!
With a meringue-like sharpness from afar and a bobbling flurry of peaks and troughs, it's easy to see how this spectacular ridgeline attained it's collective nickname, "The Dragon's Back".
There are several options for 'debrief' at a pub/cafe en route back to Sheffield (the Quiet Woman is unfortunately closed).
KIT REQUIRED - the usual preparedness of windproof and waterproof layers, footwear with good grip, food/water/flask of hot drink
TERRAIN - varied! Fields, muddy paths, some rocky sections and road. Good grip on footwear is essential. Despite the dramatic outlook of these hills, there is minimal exposure. However, the terrain underfoot is difficult at times, so be prepared! The route follows a designated path at all times, with numerous opportunities to leave the path for viewing points.
ASCENT - highest point on the route is Chrome Hill, 425m.
Weather - In the event of severe weather conditions, I'll reassess and adjust the route accordingly, if necessary. If any significant changes are made, I'll make contact prior to the day.
Public transport or car sharing options: I am not aware of any feasible public transport options from Sheffield for this route. Driving is the best option and I can offer up to 3 people a lift from Sheffield there and back again. Please get in touch with me directly to arrange.
There is ample roadside parking next to the village green of Earl Sterndale, however car sharing as much as possible will avoid clogging up this quiet village in respect of the residents.
