Come and explore the Alport Valley and Alport Castles, making the most of the peace and quiet because of the road closure.
The A57 beyond Ladybower is shut so now is a great time to explore paths which would either usually be busy or affected by the sound of the traffic. We’ll meet at Fairholmes Car Park before heading west, climbing steadily until we reach the moor above Lockerbrook farm. In good weather we’ll have great views of Win Hill, Kinder Scout and Mam Tor. In bad weather we’ll be grateful this is our only high point.
We’ll quickly find ourselves at Alport Castle, supposedly the UK’s largest ever landslip. From here we’ll head to Alport Valley, a stunning valley with, on a sunny day, a Mediterranean vibe (trust me). On a rainy day it’s more of a Derbyshire in early spring vibe. Crossing the silent A57 we’ll head back to Fairholmes via Ashop Valley and Haggside Farm. The route will alter slightly should we have bad weather. Either way it should be cracking.
Moderate walk for sure-footed walkers. A mixture of woodland or moorland footpaths mixed with farm tracks.
8 miles, 4–5 hours, 600 metres of ascent (same as twice up Win Hill)
