Rough Around the Edges

  • Fox House Hathersage Road Sheffield, England, S11 7TY United Kingdom (map)

Joint walk with Catherine H’s former group Metropolitan Walkers!

This classic walk takes in four of the Peak District’s most famous gritstone edges: White Edge, Baslow Edge, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge, with stunning views over the villages below. Once edged out, we’ll carry on to Grindleford for a snack stop at the excellent station café before walking through the always-delightful woods of Padley Gorge to take us back to Longshaw Estate. This part of the walk is approximately 12 miles and those who’ve had enough at this point can head to Fox House for a cuppa or pint.

For those who fancy a bit more mileage (and ascent!), we’ll make our way across Owler Tor and Over Owler Tor to Burbage Valley. From there we can scale Higger Tor and loop back round Burbage Edge if time allows, or simply visit Carl Wark (an Iron Age hill fort) and take the “yellow brick road” back to Fox House if time is tight. This extra bit will add no more than 4 miles to the main walk.

Transport:

Sheffield Walking Group: Stagecoach bus no. 65 dep. 09.35 Sheffield interchange (09.48 Hunters Bar), arr. Fox House 10.02. Return bus at 17.09.
