Old Road to Castleton

  • Castleton Bus Station How Lane Hope Valley, England, S33 8UA United Kingdom (map)

A windy route of old roads, paths, caves and mines. From Castleton we first pass Speedwell Cavern before climbing up the collapsed cave system now known as Winnats Pass before looping round past Blue John Cavern for a view over the village before dropping down around Treak Cliff Cavern. Heading up the old Manchester road we pass Odin's Mine before traversing the remains of the collapsed A625 on the side of Mam Tor.

Instead of climbing to the summit, we drop part way down into Edale before joining the old "Coffin Road" worshippers once took before Edale had a church, following it all the way back into Castleton. Hopefully the Christmas Tree Festival will be running again this year, but if not there should be time to look round the village before heading up the Devil's Arse for some carol singing.

Please note that there will still be a lunch stop despite the late start time.

Please also note that the map opposite is not quite showing the correct location of the bus station – please see here https://goo.gl/maps/KLC1MfPawpNBgEjP9
