This is a slightly less than 10 miles circular from Middlewood to Wharncliffe Wood and back. We’ll briefly walk along the River Don before heading up to Birley Edge via Beeley wood. We’ll (hopefully) have some great views as we walk along the edge towards Wharncliffe Wood, where we’ll stop for lunch as some point (bring packed lunches). We’ll then do a semi-circuit of the woods, making our way down towards Oughtibridge. From there, we head back to Middlewood via the picturesque River Don route.
Note that this route will no doubt involve some very muddy, slippery sections. Please wear appropriate footwear. There are no shops/toilets after Middlewood until we get to Oughtibridge.
In terms of difficultly, the initial climb up to and walk along Birley Edge might leave a few out of breath (it usually does for me!), but we’re not in any rush. Once we’ve got to Wharncliffe it’s all downhill or flat from there.
