Full description:

The border of Sheffield and South Yorkshire runs through the reservoirs of the upper Derwent valley over 10 miles from the city centre. While we won't actually skirt the border, which is in the middle of the reservoir and therefore a bit wet, we do have Howden Edge, the highest point in Sheffield at 548m altitude.

Starting at Fairholmes visitor centre, we start walking alongside Derwent Reservoir before climbing up my favourite valley, Abbey Brook. This slowly takes us onto the top of the moors, where we swing back on ourselves to reach Howden Edge, which should give a spectacular view of Howden Reservoir. Continuing north we come to Margery Hill, thought to be an artificial summit built as a bronze age burial mound. From here we turn north and the east across the moor, passing Pike Lowe before gradually descending into the Ewden valley and into Bolsterstone where there's a nice pub to wait in before the ½ mile walk to the bus stop on the edge of Stocksbridge.

WARNING: The section across the moor is likely to be wet & boggy in places, with unclear paths. Proper walking boots are essential, and if they're not in good condition be aware that you might get wet feet. There will also be very little opportunity to drop out en-route.

Public transport or car sharing options:

Catch the number 257 bus leaving Sheffield Interchange at 08:55, via Broomhill & Crosspool
Return is by the number 57 bus, hourly until late evening, via Middlewood & Hillsborough.
