Full description:

Have you ever thought it would be nice to know more about where you are walking? Or are you thinking a New Year is a good opportunity to develop a new skill? Whether you have never picked up a map in your life, or own a map but never had the confidence to lead a walk, then this walk is for you! We will aim to introduce you to basic navigation, get you looking at a map, and learn to identify features around you such as streams, walls, woodland and contours, all while having a jolly good time! No previous experience necessary.

During the walk, SWG walks leaders will pass their maps around the group, and you will each have the opportunity to lead a section yourself, supported by the walks leaders. What could possibly go wrong??

Unusually, we will start this walk in a café for a coffee, or second breakfast if you wish. Here we will get out the map, show you the proposed route, and introduce you to some basic features. It’s then off for a moderate 6 miler, taking in the Bronte Cottage and Stanage Edge before looping back to Hathersage via Little John’s grave.

We will run a series of these Learn-to-Lead walks, with the ultimate aim of supporting members to eventually have to confidence to lead (or co-lead) walks themselves. Numbers are restricted to give you maximum support. We are also restricting sign-up to Ramblers members only. If you sign up, please make every effort to attend, and this event will go ahead even in wet weather.

What to bring

Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year, with plenty of warm clothes and waterproofs. See our website for further info https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/be-prepared. Please also remember a packed lunch and water.

If you have one, please bring along an OS Peak District map (OL1 The Peak District, Dark Peak area) and a walking compass. A waterproof map cover is advised if your map is not waterproof. If you want to buy your own, remember Ramblers members get discounts at several outdoors shops!
