Castleton Caper: Walk Up a Steep Hill (and then eat your fill)

  • Castleton Visitor Centre Hope Valley, England, S33 8WN United Kingdom (map)

Walk Leader: Kate W (07914655062)

Length: 5 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Start/end point: Castleton Visitor Centre

From Castleton Visitor Centre we follow a steep and rocky path up to Long Cliff and along Winnats Pass. We descend to the road (possibly regrouping if necessary – see below) then ascend to the summit of Mam Tor. We walk along the Great Ridge to Hollins Cross then pass downhill along the abandoned road, woodland and fields back to Castleton Visitor Centre where the walk ends. Option for drinks/Sunday lunch at The Castle pub close to the walk end (Walk leader has made an initial booking for lunch, please text to advise if you would like to join and numbers can be amended accordingly)

Public transport or car sharing options: The 272 bus leaves Pond Street/Paternoster Row (Ss1 stop) at 9.52, arrives Castleton at 10.42. Return buses leave Castleton at 14.46, 15.55, 16.46, 17.55 and take 50-60 minutes. There’s parking at the Visitor Centre and local farmers tend to offer nearby all day parking for £4 (cash only)

Additional info: There is a pretty steep climb near the start of the walk where you get to haul yourself up on ropes (see pic below). This is fun but wouldn’t suit everyone. There would be an option to take a less steep route walking next to the road along Winnats Pass and regroup at Winnats Head Farm.
