Sheffield Ramblers 90th anniversary walk to celebrate the Forgotten Abbey Brook Trespass of 1932

This year on Sunday 18 September 2022 staff and volunteers at the Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre which was set up by Woodcraft Folk members from Sheffield plan to follow in the footsteps of the ramblers who all those years ago stepped out early one Sunday morning to assert their rights to walk across the moors.

On Sunday 18 September 1932 a group of walkers including members of the Woodcraft Folk set off from Sheffield to walk over the moors to via the Dukes Road near High Bradfield which eventually leads to Derwent Edge and from there down Abbey Brook to the beautiful Derwent Valley reservoirs. This is known as the Forgotten Trespass as it was preceded in April by the famous Kinder Trespass from the Manchester side.

It is a long walk - around 19 miles if you do the whole thing and will take around 10 hours. If you would like to join in for all or some of it here are the legs and public transport options available. If you want to do the whole thing please make sure you bring enough food/water and wear appropriate footwear - walking boots or walking trainers and carry a water proof (top and bottom).

You should also bring the OS Map 110 Sheffield & Huddersfield area which has the whole route on it plus the 1:25:00 Dark Peak map to cover the area over the moors from the start of the Dukes Road. And of course bring a compass as the path is quite indistinct in places over the moors to Derwent Edge.

Sadly the public transport links are pretty rubbish at the time of writing but it is possible to get to the start of the full walk by tram and to return from the end point by bus. But you may want to do a shorter version of the route by driving for example to Low Bradfield and doing an out and back or whatever variation you feel up to.

We hope that we will have a pause at the original start of the Dukes Road at midday to celebrate our rights to roam as a result of the 1932 trespass and other actions which both preceded and followed this event. If you would like to join this event please fill in this form so we can gauge the level of interest. We are also looking for experienced walkers ideally with a relevant qualification to help lead each section.
